Empress Giok off the mark in her campaign

After a troubled start to her career last year, EMPRESS GIOK showed that she is ready to prove her worth with a hard-fought victory in the Class 5 - 1700m handicap here today.

Ridding by up-and-coming apprentice Lim Aun Kean, the American four-year-old was hard pressed by LA FAMILIA before winning by a nose on a heavy track.

The mare was beaten a neck in her debut in March last year but did not race again for more than five months. Following her fourth-place finish on her return, she was on the sidelines again for eight months.

EMPRESS GIOK resumed racing two weeks ago with a second-place finish and being able to back it up with another race so soon today could only mean that her problems could be behind her.

For apprentice Lim, it was his ninth win of the season after drawing a blank in his debut last year.
