Mauritius jockey Rye Joorawon returned to riding in Malaysia with a 'bang' when he scored an easy win astride LOVE ME in the opening race here today. The American horse managed just one win last May in 15 starts and despite being unplaced in his last two starts, started joint favourite with last-start winner SPACE INVADER. But LOVE ME, after being tucked well off the pace early, proved too strong when he beat SPACE INVADER by four lengths. Joorawon had a brief riding stint in Malaysia three years ago when he rode two winners from ten rides. He came off relatively successful 2013 season in his home country where he capped off the year by winning the International Jockeys Carnival which is contested over two days at Champ De Mars racecourse. Joorawon became the first local jockey to win the title since its inception back in 1984 in defeating a star-studded line up including Australia’s Nash Rawiller, Denmark’s William Buick and Italy’s Christan Demuro. The 34-year-old has finished in the top five on the Mauritius Jockeys Premiership over the past five years with his best season in 2011, where he booted home 26 winners. He has also been the leading local jockey during this period. Joorawon is expected to ride in Malaysia until the commencement of the new racing season in Mauritius, which starts late March. |
