LUCKY NINE bounced back to
his best form to win the S$1mil KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200m) at
Kranji here tonight, becoming the first horse to win the Group 1 1200m
sprint back-to-back.
After his three-length
victory last year, the son of Dubawi raced twice at the Spring Carnival in
Melbourne where he finished second to BUFFERING in the Group 1 Manikato
Stakes.
LUCKY NINE earned a
comeback in the Hong Kong Group 1 Chairman's Sprint Prize and came to
Singapore on the back of a second in the Hong Kong Group 2 Sprint Cup last
month.
Ridden again by Brett
Prebble, LUCKY NINE again outclassed his rivals, winning by two and a half
lengths, returning a time of 1min 8.15secs which was an slight improvement
over the time (1min 8.71sec) he clocked last year.
For both winning jockey and
trainer, it was their third success in the Sprint. Prebble piloted SACRED
KINGDOM to victory in 2009 and Fownes first won the event with GREEN BIRDIE
in 2010.
"I’m immensely proud of him
and it’s been a real pleasure to have this horse. We’ve had a lot of fun
having him in our stable and it’s thrilling to get my third win in this
event," said Fownes.
Prebble, meanwhile,
credited with Fownes with LUCKY NINE's success tonight. "I’m sure he had a
lot of sleepless nights about his decision to take off the blinkers for this
race."
The reigning Group 1 Dubai
Golden Shaheen (1200m) champion STERLING CITY, ridden by Joao Moreira,
started favourite but could only finish fifth.
LUCKY NINE was chased home
by three Singaporen runners, EMPEROE MAX, ZAC SPIRIT and CAPTAIN OBVIOUS.
