Game win by Emperor Max in Saas Fee Stakes

EMPEROR MAX ($6) was backed as if he would run away with the S$200,000 Saas Fee Stakes over 1400m at Kranji here today.

But the Australian gelding had to fight for his life to win the Singapore Group 3 condition-weight event by a short head from SLEW OF LODE.

Ridden by Corey Brown, EMPEROR MAX settled second in the early running, took the lead into the home straight and was headed by SLEW OF LODE at one stage.

But EMPEROR MAX fought back gamely to notch his seventh win in 11 starts in Singapore. He also picked up two wins from five runs in Australia before coming to Singapore.

EMPEROR MAX returned to racing last month when second in the Group 3 Garden City Trophy (1200m) after having won the Group 2 Stewards' Cup (1400m) in June.

"I knew he wasn’t quite ready for 1400m, but that race was still a bit easier than the other race (Luzerne Cup over 1400m next week)," said trainer Stephen Gray.

"He was probably only 85-95% ready going into today’s race but we saved him up as much as we could and kept him ticking over and he responded with a very game win."
