Maynard has championship in his sight

KUALA LUMPUR:  May 11, 2014

Trainer Frank Maynard won both the two heats of the Malaysia 3YO Championship held at Sungei Besi here today, and in so doing is the new leader in the trainer's table with 20 winners.

SILVER DOLLAR, who won his debut in Singapore in April last year but lost his way after that, remerged under Maynard after a six-month layoff and carved out a narrow victory in the first heat over 1100m.

Despite his layoff, SILVER DOLLAR started favourite and was engaged in a duel with the second favourite ACE SURPRISE before winning by a head.

Maynard's midas touch continued to work well on SMART PEOPLE when the Australian gelding also register a hard-fought win in the second heat over 1200m.

Unplaced in two runs last year, SMART PEOPLE completed a hat-trick from just four starts under Maynard this season. But SMART PEOPLE was not the first choice in the betting.

The odds-on favourite was Maynard's other runner HOT ARISTOCRAT but he faded to finish fourth after chasing the front-running SMART PEOPLE for most of the way.

A change of name and trainer brought instant success for JACKCORP WIN (late BANDAR) who managed just a win from 23 starts previously in the Mitavite Energiza Stakes.

And the was a big surprise in the Mitavite Cup when OCEAN FORTUNE, a winner in Class 3 the last time out, was ignored in the betting and won again to pay RM141 for a win.
