ONWATS APP, who beat one
home in his debut earlier this month, created the biggest upset in the
three-week-old season when he led all the way in the Initiation - 1200m
sprint at Kranji here today.
Whereas he was always among
the rear bunch in his debut, he was quickly off the feet this time with
Malik Erasmus Aslam in the saddle, beating the heavily-backed favourites
INTENSE GOLD and TIGER STRIPES, wining by one length.
The least-backed runner in
the nine-horse field, ONWATS APP, who cost just NZ$4,000 as a yearling, paid
S$542 for a win.
"Last time (I rode him), if
there is a horse in front of him, he just doesn’t want to go. That’s why I
decided to go forward from the wide draw today," said Aslam.
"He was still looking
around a lot, but in the straight, he kicked and just found that little bit
more."
The wins was Aslam's second
winner of the season, a tremendous boost for the jockey who rode just four
winners for the whole of last year.
