ZAC SPIRIT, kept fresh
after his win in the Three Rings Trophy (1400m) on Feb 16, ended the
unbeaten run of EMPEROR MAX to win the S$200,000 Kranji Sprint over 1200m at
Kranji here tonight.
The Australian
four-year-old was engaged in a thrilling duel with EMPEROR MAX, who had
chalked up five consecutive victories from Class 4, before prevailing by a
short head.
The pair finished well
ahead of EL PADRINO, a runaway winner of the first leg of the Singapore
Sprint series, the Group 3 Merlion Trophy, last month.
It was the seventh win in
11 starts for ZAC SPIRIT who was purchased by his trainer Cliff Brown for
A$140,000 as a yearling.
He finished third in the
Group 2 Singapore 3YO Classic and Group 1 Kranji Mile last year before
finally claiming his first group win in the Three Rings Trophy.
"Fantastic, just
fantastic," exclaimed Brown. "He’s a really special horse. I thought he was
beaten over the final furlong but he showed so much heart and just refused
to let that other horse pass him."
ZAC SPIRIT's next
assignment will be the Group 1 Lion City Cup on Apr 27 and that will prove
whether he is good enough for a crack at the KrisFlyer International Sprint
next month.
