Gutsy win by Zac Spirit in Three Rings Trophy

The 2014 edition of the S$200,000 Three Rings Trophy may have only six contestants but there is no lack of excitement in the Singapore Group 3 event for three and four-year-olds over 1400m.

HOLY EMPIRE, who went down second to ZAC SPIRIT in his last start, seemed to have stolen a run on the latter when he made a two-length break at the top of the straight.

But ZAC SPIRIT, ridden by Alan Munro, wore down the pacemaker down after a keen tussle in the home stretch to win by a neck for his first group success, having finished third in the Group 2 Singapore 3YO Classic, fourth in the Group 1 Singapore Guineas and third in the Group 1 Kranji Mile last year.

ZAC SPIRIT, purchased by trainer Cliff Brown for A$140,000 as a yearling, has now chalked up six wins in 19 starts and more group wins could be coming his way.

"He came into this race underdone as there is still a long way to go," said Brown. A frightening thought for his would be rivals in the four-year-old series in the coming months.
