Having recorded his
previous eight wins up to 1700m, STEPITUP lived up to his name when he
passed his first test over 2000m to claim the S$200,000 Fortune Bowl at
Kranji here today.
Ivaldo Santana, who has now
ridden him ten times for nine wins, always has the Australian gelding in a
handy position. But when the field bunched up at the half-way stage, he
received a knock before the home turn but that failed to stop him from going
on to win by half a length.
The win just about
impressed everyone who witnessed the race but nine more so than his jockey.
"Even though I’ve ridden
many good horses in Brazil and it is different there and hard to compare, I
will still say he’s the best horse I’ve ridden in my career – just on his
big heart," said the Brazilian.
Last year's three-year-old
triple crown winner returned to racing last October but was unplaced in the
Kranji Mile and Raffles Cup before restoring some pride in the Group 3
Colonial Chief Stakes last December.
He record now reads 12
starts for nine wins and one second and just over $980,000 in prizemoney.
