Callow wins Piala Emas
Sultan Selangor again KUALA LUMPUR: Jun 8, 2014 |

Noel "King" Callow weaved his magic again on Singapore runner TRUDEAU to win the RM500,000 Piala Emas Sultan Selangor (2000m) for the fourth consecutive year at Sungei Besi here today. He is also the most successful jockey in the Cup which was first run in 1980 as a 1600m event at the old Jalan Ampang racecourse and the distance was switched to 2000m in 2004. The Australian jockey won the cross-border race on the Singapore raiders RISKY BUSINESS and SPEED BABY, both trained by Steven Burridge, in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Last year, he was successful on GOOD SIGHT for Ipoh based trainer Kevin Coetzee. TRUDEAU won back-to-back trophies, the Group 3 Garden City Trophy (1200m) and Group 2 EW Barker Trophy (1400m) last year but has come up short in Singapore this season. Despite having never been tested beyond 1700m at Kranji, trainer Bruce Marsh decided to send the Australian six-year-old up north, making the trip with Laurie Laxon's MARTIN. The gamble paid off, thanks to a superb ride by Callow who patiently bidded for his time on TRUDEAU knowing his mount is an unknown quality over the 2000m. Callow took up a handy second position early and even allowed his mount to slip to third when JACKCORP WIN was eager to challenge MONEY MACHINE for the lead. At was only at the 200m that Callow took a gap between the two front-runners and changed to the front. TRUDEAU won by one and a half lengths from JACKCORP WIN with MONEY MACHINE holding on for third. "This is the first time I’ve sent a runner to Malaysia and we’ve won. This doesn’t get any better," said Marsh who watched the race on TV at Kranji. It was a successful reunion for Callow and TRUDEAU who actually started his MRA career in Malaysia, winning his one and only start on this track in August 2011 before the gelding crossed the border to Singapore where he has chalked up five wins. TRUDEAU also won two races in Australia before coming to the local circuit. MARTIN started favourite with Craig Newitt astride but never looked like winning, finishing seven of nine runners. |
