Magical moment for apprentice Chan

Nearly six months after making his debut, apprentice Chan Wei Sheng finally landed his breakthrough win astride GYPSY MAGIC in the opening event at Kranji here today.

Having won all his previous six starts on the polytrack, the Australian seven-year-old once again proved his mettle on the surface, winning by one length.

Whereas he led all the way to win over 1200m last month, this time Chan settled him off the pace, then brought the gelding with a well-timed run to win drawing away.

"(Trainer Leslie) Khoo told me to settle this horse at the back as he thought there would be a lot of pace in the race," said Chan. "At the top of the straight, my horse was running on very well and I had a feeling today could be my day. When I hit the line first today, the feeling was just unbelievable."

Chan, who has done all his training in Singapore, has ridden 36 times previously with just one placing to show.

"A friend who knew a jockey told me during National Service about the STAR programme and I was interested straightaway as I’ve always been into extreme sport," he said.

"I’ve never been interested in horse racing before – never heard of it, but I thought I’d give it a try."
