Yastrzemski on target in
Penang Gold Cup PENANG: Dec 28, 2014 |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cross-border racing at Penang may have ended this year due to the dramatic drop in prizemoney but it was a former Singapore galloper who triumphed in the RM350,000 Yang Di Pertua Negeri Gold Cup over 2000m here today. YASTRZEMSKI, who only resumed racing two months ago after being out of action for more than 15 months, easily defeated eight other runners in this end-of-year classic. Ridden by Sofhan Latif, the New Zealand six-year-old won by two lengths from MONEY MACHINE. YASTRZEMSKI cost NZ$145,000 as a yearling and won three of 16 starts in Singapore. His last appearance at Kranji was in June last year. Now trained by Frank Maynard, the six-year-old beat one home in his Malaysian debut in October but quickly stepped it up to win at Sungei Besi the next start. YASTRZEMSKI then finished second to SISTER IN LAW in the Chairman's Guineas Trophy at Sungei Besi two weeks ago and stepped it up once again today. It was the second success in the Gold Cup for Maynard who saddled NEW KUALA DIPANG to victory in 2007. For Sofhan, it was his third win in the Gold Cup, having scored on CONFIDENCE V in 1996 and LOUIS THIRTEEN in 2003. |
