Zafonic Star shines again in Malaysia

After 16 months without success including more than nine months on the sidelines, ZAFONIC STAR has resurrected his career in a big way in Malaysia.

Now under the care of Thomas Gillespie, the South African gelding finished third in his debut in the country early last month before scoring a comeback win in a Class 4 - 1100m handicap at Sungei Besi later in the month.

With MM Firdaus back in the saddle after his last start success, ZAFONIC STAR showed further headway when he took on an Enrich Stakes A set-weight event over the 1100m straight course today.

After racing in midfield early, ZAFONIC STAR raced up to the leaders approaching the course proper and hit the front soon after to win drawing away by three and a half lengths.

ZAFONIC STAR showed a lot of promise early in his career when, after unplaced debut, he reeled off three wins in 2010 at Kranji. But he made little headway after that, although he did manage another win in Class 4 in February 2012.

Now with two wins and a third in as many starts in Malaysia, he might just have raced himself into the reckoning for the RM200,000 Perak Gold Vase which will be run on the same course and distance next Sunday.
