WAR AFFAIR resumed from a
five-month let-up to carve out a thrilling win in the S$500,000 Lion City
Cup (1200m) at Kranji here today.
It was one of the most
exciting finishes ever witnessed in the Singapore Group 1 event, with four
horses almost in a line going to the winning post.
The last time WAR AFFAIR
raced over 1200m was when he won the Singapore Three-Year-Old Sprint in
March last year. Since then, the New Zealand gelding has been tested over
longer trips, winning the Kranji Mile (1600m) and Raffles Cup (1800m) and
was spelled after a fifth-place finish in the Singapore Gold Cup (2200m).
Fresh from his time on the
sidelines, WAR AFFAIR (Alan Munro) came from a long way back to nail ZAC
SPIRIT, who was attempting to make it back-to-back wins in the Cup, by a
short head.
"I was very worried at the
600m. He hasn’t closed up with the rest yet," said trainer Alwin Tan. "I
could only pray hard he could still run on in the last 400m."
WAR AFFAIR will now be
aimed for the Singapore Four-Year-Old series.
