War Affair battles to victory in Stewards' Cup

After winning his seasonal debut in the Group 1 Lion City Cup (1200m) last month, WAR AFFAIR was always going to be hard to beat in the S$300,000 Stewards' Cup (1400m) at Kranji here today.

That he packs too much class for his seven rivals in the the first leg of the Singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge today after his last start win in open company was acknowledged by all.

The Singapore Turf Club set the win payout for this race at S$5.30 while the Malaysian clubs abandoned betting for the race altogether.

WAR AFFAIR got the result but had to do it the hard way..

Ridden for the second consecutive race by Alan Munro, the New Zealand gelding was caught wide all the way and was four-deep making the turn.

He hit the front at the top of the straight but could not kicked clear of his rivals. The front-running HAPPY MONEY fought back tenaciously but ended up a length behind the raging favourite.

It's now 13 wins and three seconds in 18 starts for the gelding who will now go for the next two legs, Patrons' Bowl (1600m) next month and Derby (2000m) in July.
