After finding one to beat in the first two legs of the
Singapore Three-Year-Old Challenge, AFFLECK bounced back to his best form to
win the final leg, the S$500,000 Singapore Guineas (1600m) at Kranji here
tonight.
The top two-year-old of last year was expected to make a
clean sweep of the Three-Year-Old series but was short on fitness when he
went down to KIWI KARMA in the Sprint (1200m) last Apr 3.
AFFLECK then found SPANISH BAY too too gutsy in the
Classic (1400m) on Apr 17.
But New Zealand gelding turned the tables on the latter
when he won comfortably by one-and-three-quarter lengths in the Guineas.
JIMMY REA pipped SPANISH BAY for second.
It was first Singapore Group 1 success for top Melbourne
rider Michael Rodd who has been riding in Singapore since January and the
second time he has partnered AFFLECK.
"He was not fit enough in the first two Legs. As we had
moved stables, I had to use someone else’s walking machine to get the
fitness back in him," revealed trainer Laurie Laxon after the win.
Now that he is back at his best, AFFLECK is sure to build
on his already impressive record of seven wins and three seconds in 10
starts. "He will definitely get better over more ground," said his nine-time
Singapore champion trainer.
