After finishing on board in his first five outings over shorter trips, NINETYSEVENEMPEROR appreciated a step-up in distance when he scored a runaway win in the Initiation - 1600m event at Kranji here today.

Apprentice A'Isisuhairi Kassim had the three-year-old midfield early but the gelding was travelling so well that he took him to the front making the turn into the straight and the pair never looked back.

NINETYSEVENEMPEROR coasted home four lengths clear of the rest.

The New Zealand bred was originally purchased by Michael Freedman for NZ$130,000 as a yearling and raced twice for Freedman before trainer Leslie Khoo took charge of him in April.

"I think the distance suited him and the blinkers helped him to focus better, but I just couldn’t believe how far ahead we were," said A'Isisuhairi. NINETYSEVENEMPEROR was spotting blinkers for the third time today. He found one to beat in his last two outings.

"I’ve had him for only four runs since he came from Michael Freedman, but he’s really improved a lot.," said Khoo. "This horse can stay and the step-up to the mile suited him. I may even step him up over further in the future."
