Fastnet Dragon closing in on Derby

FASTNET DRAGON has emerged as a Derby prospect after passing his first test over the mile with flying colours, making it four wins in a row in the Class 3 - 1600m handicap at Kranji here today.

With regular rider Alan Munro astride, the Fastnet Rock gelding was always travelling well behind the pacemaker EAGLE STORM and after hitting the front 300m out, easily held to his lead to win by one and a half lengths.

FASTNET DRAGON cost A$147,500 as a yearling. The Australian gelding started out in Initiation company. After finishing third twice over 1200m, he went to win his first attempt over the 1400m.

Trainer by Leslie Khoo, FASTNET DRAGON picked up two more victories over 1400m before today's test over the 1600m and he should have no problem seeing out the 2000m distance of the Derby, run on Jul 12 as his dam (Sister Madrid by Fuji Fiseki) is a winner over 2025m.

"He runs very relaxed now and I think he will handle the 2000m no problem," said Khoo who himself won the Derby once in 1988 on GRAND ILLUSION when it was a open handicap event.
