Hughsy claims Admiralty Classic Stakes

With jockey Corey Brown committed to another runner, trainer David Hill decided to run HUGHSY in the S$150,000 Admiralty Classic Stakes (1600m) at Kranji here today instead of his original target, the Group 2 Queen Elizabeth II Cup.

As it turned out, the Australian gelding, partnered by Brown, was third time lucky in group races when he scored by one and a half lengths from BOURBON GOLDMAN.

However, victory in the Group 3 event for HUGHSY had to be confirmed in the stewards' room when the rider of the second-placed runner lodged a protest for alleged interference which was dismissed.

HUGHSY was unplaced in the Colonial Chief Stakes (1700m) last December and two months ago ran a creditable third to ABSOLUTELY in the Three Rings Trophy (1400m).

"This horse has come on with every run. He’s improved each time," said Hill.

Brown said: "He’s a lovely horse. He just raced away and won as he liked today."

HUGHSY will be aimed for the Emirates Singapore Derby in July.
