Apprentice Khoody lands maiden win

Mahess Khoody is the lastest apprentice from Mauritius who has ridden into the winner's circle while learning the trade in Malaysia when successful on LIGHTNING ROD in a Class 5 - 1400m handicap here today.

The 19-year-old has ridden just six times since making his debut in April and his seventh and only ride of the afternoon provided him the breakthrough. But it was not achieved without an effort.

His mount LIGHTNING ROD started a firm second (RM12) behind CHINESE STREET (RM11) in the six-horse field. Outsider MARYLEBONE PARK attempted to make all the running but LIGHTNING ROD got up close home to beat him by a short head.

It was the gelding's second win in three starts since coming under the charge of trainer Peter Lee and his third win overall.

The other Mauritius apprentices who have already found success are Daniel Jagadishan, Michael Migale, Paveel Mogun and Rashpassing Mayur.

Trainer Shanmugam Subramaniam, meanwhile, also had plenty of reason to celebrate as he saddled his first winner of the year with HENNESSY DRAGON in a Class 5 - 1000m event.

Shanmugam won four races in his maiden season last year but HENNESSY DRAGON was just his 20th runner of the season.
