Racing in Malaysia suspended KUALA LUMPUR: Sep 2, 2015 |

Racing in Malaysia has been temporarily suspended until further notice as a result of an outbreak of respiratory disease in the country. In Penang Turf Club, one horse which has shown symptoms related to the respiratory infection has since recovered after being treated with antibiotics. The horse is presently isolated from the general population. The remaining uninfected horses are permitted to do trackwork at the Club. In Perak Turf Club, there are about 30 horses which have shown symptoms related to the respiratory infection and have been isolated. They have been treated with antibiotics and are recovering. Bio security measures have been implemented at the Club. The remaining uninfected horses are permitted to do trackwork at the Club. In Selangor Turf Club, about 90 horses which have shown signs of respiratory infection. Those treated with antibiotics are recovering well. Trackwork at the Selangor Turf Club has stopped but is expected to resume for the uninfected horses tomorrow. Bio security measures have also been implemented at the Club. Samples from the infected horses have been sent to the Veterinary Research Institute, Malaysia as well as the AVA Singapore's laboratory on Aug 28 for analysis to determine the cause of the infection. Due to the outbreak, the Department of Veterinary Services, Malaysia has imposed a restriction on the movement of race horses. As a result, racing in Malaysia is temporarily suspended until further notice. |
