Two expatriate trainers based at Sungei Besi here have relinquished their licences this month.

Aditiyan Selvaratnam bowed out on May 11 while Thomas Gillespie ended his tenure on May 15.

Sri Lankan born and Pakistan raised Selvaratnam started his training career in Kuwait in 1987, later moved to Oman and was in Dubai for 10 years from 1999.

He came to Malaysia in 2010 and saddled five winners that year. He doubled the score the following year but managed just 10 winners in the subsequent three seasons, with only one win to his name last year.

Selvaratnam managed four wins this season before quitting. The best horse he trained in Malaysia was by far MUDHISH who scored five times including the Japan Bloodhorse Breeders Association Stakes (1400m) in Penang in 2011.

Thomas Gillespie also began his MRA career in 2010 saddling nine winners that year.

However, it was after he moved from Penang to Sungei Besi that he enjoyed his best seasons, winning 36 races in 2013 and 22 last year. He won eight races this season before quitting.

Gillespie is son of former top Irish jockey Declan Gillespie who rode more than 1,000 winners including the Irish 2000 Guineas, Irish Oaks, Irish St Leger and Coronation Stakes.
