Gold Rutile shines in EW Barker Trophy

GOLD RUTILE caused a major upset when he outsprinted the topweight and favourite SPALATO, and the second top topweight MAGNETO to win the S$350,000 EW Barker Trophy at Kranji here tonight.

Surprise as it may be in the Singapore Group 3 event over 1400m, for the Japanese mare, it was a steady progression  in the past two months.

In September, the seven-year-old finished third to SPALATO in the Jumbo Jet Trophy over the same distance. Last month, she beat all but DRAGON FURY in the Saas Fee Stakes, also over 1400m.

This time, however, GOLD RUTILE was able to come from behind to beat SPALATO by a neck, albeit enjoying a 7.5kg pull over the favourite in the handicap event. She paid $232.

With regular rider Alan Munro opting to ride the second favourite JIMMY REA, the ride on the mare went to Oscar Chavez.

"I’ve been winning only once in a month, and now I get a Group 2 win. It couldn’t get any better than that," said Chavez.

"She’s already seven and she has always been consistent and I thought it would be hard to beat Spalato, but the weight difference was in our favour," said trainer Hideyuki Takaoka.

GOLD RUTILE case to Singapore after winning twice and was placed seven times in 22 starts from two to four years old in Japan. She has now picked up six wins and 17 placings in 32 outings at Kranji.
