Shafiq steals show with five winners

Although he did not win the main event of the afternoon, the Patrons' Bowl, apprentice Shafiq Rizuan hogged the limelight by booting home five winners from nine rides at Kranji here this afternoon.

Since resuming riding in March after serving a lengthy suspension, the Kelantan lad has been rapidly making up for lost time.

After overtaking the lead in the apprentice table last month, Shafiq soared to new heights with his first five-timer. "I haven’t even won four in one day, and now I have won five," he said after dismounting from LASER STORM in the final event.

"Looking at my booking today, I knew I had some good chances and was expecting two or three winners but certainly not five."

"I was really down when I was suspended for so long, but I told myself I had to work hard to get back to the top when I come back," he said of his two suspensions which sidelined him for seven months.

Shafiq, the 2011 champion apprentice, started the day with back-to-back double on WONDERFUL ERA and DOUBLE RAINBOW. His two other winner were APPELLATION and FREE HAPPY.
