Spalato returns to racing in style

SPALATO came back from a eight-month enforced lay-off to annihilate his rivals in the S$200,000 Woodlands Handicap (1200m) on the polytrack at Kranji here today.

Parked second on the outside of the pacemaker EL MILAGRO till the top of the straight, the New Zealand gelding raced away from his rivals with consummate ease to win by five and a quarter lengths.

The win, coming after two unplaced runs in Hong Kong at the tail-end of last year, means that SPALATO remains undefeated in seven starts on home soil.

Trained by John O'Hara, SPALATO won the Patrons' Bowl and Emirates Singapore Derby to be named the 2014 champion four-year-old.

"It’s such a relief he won, especially after all the problems he’s had since Hong Kong," said O'Hara, referring to the lesion on his pelvic area which forced his spell on the sidelines.
