Stepitup bags Yew Tee Classic Stakes

Class prevailed as the multiple group winner STEPITUP gained yet another stakes win in the $150,000 Yew Tee Classic Stakes over 1800m at Kranji here today.

Although the Australian five-year-old was coming up against some smart opposition, many of them group winners themselves, he still proved too good despite carrying top weight of 59kg in the condition-weight event.

Champion jockey Manoel Nunes judged the pace to perfection, bringing the gelding from well back early to win by half-a-length from EMPEROR'S BANQUET.

"He’s the class horse in the race but I was a bit worried about the weight," said Nunes. "He’s a small horse with a big heart and always puts in 100% in his races and today was no different."

STEPITUP was the champion three-year-old in 2013, making a clean sweep of the Three-Year-Old Challenge series but just failed short in the Patrons' Bowl and Derby as a four-year-old.

After a change of trainer to Laurie Laxon late last year, STEPITUP was back in the big time when he captured the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2000m) last April. He has now 11 wins from 28 starts.
