Last-start winner NOVA STRIKE was
backed down to odds-on in the Novice - 1100m sprint on the polytrack at
Kranji here tonight, but the New Zealand gelding gave his backers plenty of
anxious moments before completing his double.
The three-year-old settled in fourth spot behind the leading bunch and he
was right on their heels as they turned for home.
But as DEVIL'S PASS beat off the early pacemaker SUPER JOY and surged clear,
NOVA STRIKE just could not gain ground on the leader. FINE CHOICE also came
into the picture from the 200m.
It was only in the final 50m that NOVA STRIKE, vigorously ridden by
apprentice Shafiq Rizuan, rapidly closed the gap and put his head in front
to win by that margin.
NOVA STRIKE was purchased for NZ$60,000 at the Ready To Run sale. He landed
in March this year and was transferred to Alwin Tan before making his debut
in August, finishing second.
The big surprise of the night came from 10-year-old STANZOUT who chalked up
his 10th win in the Class 5 - 1600m event, returning $120.
