It has taken Malaysian apprentice Amirul Ismadi, 22, just three rides to make his mark in Singapore.

Amirul moved to Singapore in the new season to join trainer Stephen Gray after having ridden 15 winners in Malaysia last year and notching up nine wins in his debut season in 2014.

Amirul's first ride tonight, PUSAKA, finished fourth in the opening event. He then brought TARAMEA from just off the pace to win the Kranji Stakes D, Div 2 - 1400m event for his master. It was the second win in eight starts for the New Zealand gelding.

"The instructions were to hunt him (TARAMEA) up and race up with the pace. He ran very relaxed and at the 100m I knew I had my first Singapore win,” said Amirul who was indentured to Evert van Breukelen and Kevin Coetzee before joining his father Ismadi Ismail when dad obtained his trainer's licence two years ago.

Amirul's father and his uncle Azhar were top local riders in their days in the MRA circuit. Azhar is currently based in Singapore and it was he who told his nephew there would be more opportunities in Singapore and approached Gray to take on the young lad.
