Much was expected of ARAMCO when he was purchased by Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum for A$750,000 as a yearling. After all, he is a half-brother to Golden Slipper winner MOSSFUN.

But despite a debut fourth in the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes as a juvenile and a consistent record in Melbourne, he did not measure up to the expectation of his owner and found his way to Singapore.

In Singapore, ARAMCO was classified in Class 4 and racegoers were quick to spot his class and sent him out odds-on favourite in his debut in a 1200m sprint at Kranji here tonight.

And the son of Magic Albert did not let his backers down. After missing the start, jockey John Powell moved him up to second spot behind WHITE COFFEE before sweeping to the front to win by one length.

"He won with something in hand and will definitely improve from that first run," said trainer Shane Baertschiger.

"He raced mainly over short sprints in Australia, though he ran over 1400m at his last couple of starts. I will probably test him over 1400m at some stage, but we’ll just let him go through his grades first. He’s a very nice horse."

For the record, ARAMCO
won a 2YO Open event and was placed six times in 10 starts over two seasons in Melbourne.
