Brazilian jockey Elione Chaves got his Singapore stint off to a flying start when he won his very first ride at Kranji here tonight.

Partnering the Leslie Khoo-trained KING OF THEIVES, Chaves eased the New Zealand gelding into a handy third after sharing the early lead.

But the four-year-old was travelling well and Chaves took a run between the two front runners and hit the front turning into the straight.

KING OF THIEVES, who cost just NZ$8,000 as a two-year-old, went on to win by 1 3/4 lengths for his first win in four starts.

"It’s great. First ride, first winner," said Chaves who was eight times champion jockey in Sweden.

"I saw him ride and I liked the way he rode. I thought why not give him a ride and I picked this horse," said Khoo, a former top jockey himself.

Chaves is licensed to ride in Singapore until the end of March.

There were two manor upsets tonight.

 ZENZERO broke the duck in his 26th start to pay $133 while SALUT AMOUR also broke through for his maiden win in seven outings to pay $219.
