South African jockey Derreck David,
originally licensed for one and a half months from Feb 1, made a belated
Singapore debut at Kranji here tonight but wasted no time to make his mark
by winning the Racing Guide Classic in his very first ride astride POSEIDON.
A delay in processing his work permit means that he will
be in Singapore for just one weekend.
"My
dream has come true," said David on returning to scale. "It was already a
dream to ride here at the Singapore Turf Club and to win at my first ride,
it doesn’t get any better than this."
The New Zealand gelding went into the set-weight 1400m event on the back of
two wins over the same distance in the last two months and quickly took
charge from a wide barrier to lead all the way.
In a wide betting race, it was the favourite DRAGON FURY who came closest in
the final 100m. Although he drifted out in the run home to allow two horses
to come from on his inside, POSEIDON held on to win by a short head for his
fifth win in 15 starts.
David, the champion South African apprentice in 2009, continued to ride with
great success as a senior rider and has chalked up 650 wins.
He was also the champion jockey in Mauritius in 2015 and has also ridden by
Zimbabwe and Dubai.
