Nunes back where he belongs

After a rather slow start to the season, champion jockey Manoel Nunes is finally back on top of the chart after he booted home two winners at Kranji here today.

Nunes won the premiership in 2014 with 108 winners, 25 ahead of Danny Beasley and was 35 winners ahead of Corey Crown with 122 wins last year.


LITTLE BIG MAN, who finished fourth in his debut and second last time out, gave Nunes the lead when he coasted to an easy win in the Initiation - 1400m event.

The New Zealand gelding was sold for NZ$9,000 as a weanling and is a half brother to TIME TO SHINE, a four-time winner in Malaysia.

Nunes completed a double with SIR REGINALD, a gelding he was riding for the first time, in the final event to bring his tally to six so far. It was the second win in eight starts for the four-year-old.

Oscar Chavez, who rode only 20 winners last year, has started the new season well, booting home a double of his own on SUPER JOY and SMART PEOPLE to trail Nunes in second place with five winners.

New face Elione Chaves, who made a winning debut with KING OF THIEVES last Friday, was back in the winner's circle with HAPPY JOY.
