Olechea lands first win in Malaysia

Rodrigo Olechea, who has ridden winners in his native Brazil and all over Europe, landed his winner in Malaysia when he booted home BIG EGO to victory in a Class 5 - 1400m handicap here today.

The American gelding began the new season with a comeback win last month after drawing a blank last year. But after dismal showings in two subsequent starts, the six-year-old was sent out at long odds today.

Olechea, who was riding him for the first time, settled him second behind pacemaker PROPITIONS GOLD before taking him past the leader at the 200m to win by 1 3/4 lengths. It was the gelding's fifth win in 35 starts.

A day after fellow Mauritius apprentice Daniel Jagadishan landed his 10th winner, Palveer Mogun created a moment of history of his own when he recorded his first double astride TRUSON and ONLY YOU.

TRUSON has been very consistent with six wins and six placings in his first 14 starts and found one to beat in his first two outings this season.

ONLY YOU, who cost only NZ$5,500 as a yearling, made it two wins, and a third, in three starts with another stylish performance.

With the double, Mogun's career total is just two winners behind that of Daniel.
