Perfect start to new racing season

PERFECT P stepped up on his splendid third in the Singapore Gold Cup (2200m) last start to win the first feature race of the 2016 season, the S$200,000 New Year Cup at Kranji here today, the opening day of the new season.

The Argentinean gelding not only turned the table on the Gold Cup winner COOPTADO, he also asserted his superiority over the shorter 1900m trip today with a runaway 3 1/2-length win.

ORDER OF THE SUN, who dead-heated to win the Colonial Chief Stakes before the Singapore racing took a two-week break, just beat COOPTADO for second placing.

PERFECT P showed great promise in his first season last year when he chalked up four wins, a second and a third in seven starts, and drew attention to his potential with a third place finish in the Gold Cup.

This is the fourth win in the past six years for trainer Patrick Shaw in the New Year Cup, after ESCAMONDA (2011), LIZARRE (2013) and QUECHUA (2015).

Mark Walker, who captured his first trainer's premiership here last year, got the new season off to a great start by winning the open event with ZAC GALLANT. He then completed a double with KAM'S COMET.
