Quechua wins Chairman's Trophy

Patrick Shaw capped a superb weekend when he saddled QUECHUA to win the S$300,000 Chairman's Trophy (1800m) at Kranji here today.

After ending four winners on Friday evening, the South African trainer added three more this afternoon but the one that mattered was the Group 2 feature event which he had won in 2010 with THUNDERING JET.

QUECHUA, the 2014 Gold Cup winner who went on to win last year's Derby, appeared to be back at his best with a win last time out in Kranji Stakes A company and now the Chairman's Trophy.

Partnered by Corey Crown, the Argentinian gelding had to battle hard to stave off the challenge of stablemate and equal favourite at $15 before winning by a head.

"It’s great to end off this amazing weekend like this," said Shaw.

"He’s a jockey’s dream, I’ve won five Group races with him now. He is great to ride and he shows such tenacity and fight and a will to win that is second to none," Corey said of QUECHUA who has now won eight times in 22 starts in Singapore.
