QUECHUA returned to the winner's
circle for the first time since winning the Emirates Singapore Derby last
July to spearhead a 1-2-3-4 finish for trainer Patrick Shaw in the S$200,000
Fortune Bowl over 2000m at Kranji here today.
Since the Derby, the Argentinean gelding seldom ran a bad race with placings
in the Kranji Mile, the Raffles Cup and New Year Cup in four starts. He
failed to defend the Singapore Gold Cup which he won in 2015 with a
fifth-place finish and punters had no hesitation to send him out the firm
favourite in today's Group 3 contest.
Ridden by Corey Brown who also partnered him in his last three group wins,
QUECHUA settled nicely behind the pace set by ORDER OF THE SUN before
challenging for the lead and fought off EMPEROR'S BANQUET to win by a head
with the second favourite PERFECT P coming home third.
QUECHUA has now won six times in 18 starts in Singapore, adding to his
record of two wins and five placings in eight outings in Argentina.
"The
fast pace played into Quechua’s hands. It was too fast for Perfect P, but it
suited Quechua just nice," said Shaw. "If we get a Dubai invitation, we’ll
definitely go."
QUECHUA is entered for the US$6 million Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic (2400m)
in Dubai World Cup night on Mar 26.
