Five years after he embarked on a career in horse racing, apprentice Syed Zainal finally landed his first win when he steered STORM TROOPER to victory in the Class 4, Div 1 - 1040m handicap at Kranji here today.

STORM TROOPER has finished down the field in four starts since his last win in July. Today, Syed managed to bring him from a long way back in the running to beat the favourite WHOSE ELSE'S by a neck and paid S$222 for a win.

Syed, a former guest relations officer at the Singapore Zoo, spent 1 1/2 years in New Zealand learning the trade. "I didn't ride in races but I got a lot exposure in barrier trials," he said.

"If there is one person who is my biggest influence, it has to be Noel Harris (former New Zealand champion jockey who also rode successfully in Malaysia and Singapore)."

STORM TROOPER, a NZ$70,000 yearling, has now won four times in 22 starts.
