Super win for new trainer Tan

Tan Kah Soon, who made bow in the trainer's ranks only last month, has saddled his first feature winner after CLARTON SUPER came from behind to capture the Group 2 EW Barker Trophy at Kranji here tonight.

No rookie trainer in recent times has achieved a 'black type' win so early in his career.

CLARTON SUPER won three races earlier this season for trainer David Hill when Tan was his assistant trainer.

Under Tan, the Australian gelding finished a decent fifth in a Kranji Stakes C event two weeks ago before his giant-killing act tonight.

The icing on the cake for Tan was that CLARTON SUPER was ridden by fellow Malaysian Azhar Ismail who has piloted him in all his four wins.

"He is a quality horse and with the light weight (Azhar Ismail rode him 1.5kgs over at 51.5kgs) helping, he proved it tonight, even if his prep leading up to tonight was probably not what we wanted," said Tan.

"If he had won at his last start, I was actually thinking of running him in the Gold Cup, but it’s worked out good in the end. I’ve won a Group 2 race only two months after I started, I can’t complain."
