GILT COMPLEX, who captured the
Raffles Cup three weeks ago for his first group success, landed an even
bigger prize when he prevailed in a nail-biting finish in the Dester
Singapore Gold Cup at Kranji here today.
The coveted was run over 2200m for the last time today (before switching to
2000m next year) and the first three horses were only separated by a photo.
GILT COMPLEX beat BAHANA by a nose with ELITE
EXCALIBUR a short head away third. Both GILT COMPLEX and ELITE EXCALIBUR are trained by Cliff Brown
who was winning the Gold Cup for first time after a decade in Singapore.
"Michael
said he found a second wind at the 600m, I actually thought he wouldn’t stay
the trip," said Brown. "Elite Excalibur was fantastic, but Bahana is such a
natural stayer. It was a fantastic result."
"I thought he was gone at the 600m. I was just tacking up behind the horse
in front and I thought I would run a nice fourth," said winning jockey
Michael Rodd. "But he found another gear when I took him to the fence, he
was just pushing himself to get there and it’s just so amazing to win the
Gold Cup."
GILT COMPLEX was originally purchased by Sungei Besi based trainer Anna
Scott for just NZ$10,000 as a yearling but headed for Singapore instead. He
won three times for John O'Hara in 2015 before moving to Brown. He has now
eight wins from 26 starts.
