Gilt Complex bags Raffles Cup

GILT COMPLEX caused a big upset when he scored an easy win in the S$700,000 Raffles Cup at Kranji here today.

Always well up with the pace, the New Zealand six-year-old won easily by 1 3/4 lengths, beating some of the biggest names in Singapore, including last year's Raffles Cup winner DEBT COLLECTOR. He paid S222 for a win.

GILT COMPLEX might have fared badly in two recent group races. But he had already shown his potential in the past, finishing third to BAHANA in the El Dorado Classic this time last year and was second to INFANTRY in the JBBA Moonbeam Vase (1800m) last April.

For jockey A'Isisuhairi Kassim, it was his first Group 1 success.

"It’s a phenomenal feeling. I’ve won three Group 2 races and one Group 3 race, but we all try to win a Group 1 race, and I’ve always believed that Group 1 win would happen," said the Kelantan-born rider.

It was the seventh win in 25 starts for GILT COMPLEX who was originally purchased by former Malaysian trainer Anna Scott for NZ$10,000 as a yearling.
