Lim's Cruiser wins Lion City Cup

LIM'S CRUISER, who resumed from a four-month break to win the Group 3 Rocket Man Sprint three weeks ago, stepped it up to claim the richest sprint prize, the S$800,000 Lion City Cup, at Kranji here today.

The son of Casino Prince ended last season with victory in the Group 2 EW Barker Trophy and today's success brought his record to five wins, two seconds and a third from as many starts in Singapore.

Ridden by Danny Beasley, LIM'S CRUISER won by two lengths from ALIBI.

Sold at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale, he had raced twice in New Zealand for a third in a Maiden event at Avondale.

It was a bitter-sweet moment for trainer Stephen Gray who was supposed to be celebrating his first Lion City Cup success.

But his other runner, EMPEROR MAX, who started favourite despite a 12-month layoff, bled. The winner of nine races including the Lion City Cup in 2015 will be retired after beating one home.

"It’s the end of an era, a new era starts," said Gray.
