Newcomer DEADLINE DAY created a
huge upset in his debut when he accounted for three well-backed runners,
including the favourite O'REILLY STAR (who finished third), in the
Restricted Maiden - 1200m event here today.
Bought for just NZ$5,000 as a yearling, the gelding landed last October and
was sold to new owners just last month.
His two trials so far has been fair and punters sent him out at $269 for his
debut.
Ridden by Oliver Placais, DEADLINE DAY came from just off the pace to run
down SUPER TYCOON to win by three-quarter length.
DEADLINE DAY is a half-brother to former top juvenile ONCEUPONATIME.
"He’s
well bred but I didn’t think he would have won over 1200m first-up. He needs
at least 1400m to a mile and I thought he needed a little bit more
experience," said trainer James Peters.
