Mr Hanks bags Juvenile Championship

Beaten favourite in the Aushorse Golden Horseshoe three weeks ago, MR HANKS quickly made amends to win the Juvenile Championship here today.

The Group 2 event for two-year-olds was run for the first time over 1400m this year.

A runaway winner in his debut last month, a wide draw of 13 in a capacity 16-horse field was cited as the main reason in the gelding's below par performance in the Aushorse Golden Horseshoe.

There was no such disadvantage today. Drawn 3 in a nine-horse field, MR HANKS was briefly in the lead early but jockey Vlad Duric eased him back to settle third behind MAKE U FAMOUS who took up the running.

WHISTLING WIND headed MAKE U FAMOUS making the turn into the straight but was quickly tackled by MR HANKS.

MR HANKS kicked clear at the 200m. IFFRAGAL came charging home in the final 100m but MR HANKS held on to win by a head. BE BEE, winner of the Aushorse Golden Horseshoe could manage only fourth this time.

"This horse tries very hard and I think we saw the real MR HANKS today. The good barrier helped a lot, too," said trainer James Peters.

MR HANKS came to Singapore after chalking up two seconds, a fourth and seventh in the Karaka Million in as many starts in New Zealand. He was second in the listed Murdoch Newell Stakes at Pukekohe.
