South African jockey Aldo Domeyer
narrowly pipped Scottish jockey Robert Havlin, 55 points to 54, to emerge as
the top rider in the inaugural Premier Gateway International Jockeys
Challenge at Kranji here tonight, but it was the Australian team of Hugh
Bowman, Kerrin McEvoy and Mark Zahra who took home the team prize.
Havlin took the first of four challenge races on O'REILLY STAR while
team-mate Fran Berry scored on MCGREGOR but it was not enough as they lost
out on the team prize on 115 points, just two shy of the Aussies.
Domeyer won the third challenge race on SAFEER and was also third on
HOUSEBOAT HARRY in the first challenge race.
Havlin also has a third placing, on MELTING POINT in the second challenge
event but results of their two other riders eventually determined their
final position.
McEvoy, a
former second jockey at Godolphin Stable to Frankie
Dettori, took the second challenge race
on odds-on favourite MISTER YEOH and significant point contributions from
Bowman and Zahra earned them the team trophy.
Domeyer, 31, has racked up in excess of 850 winners,
including 21 Group and 18 Listed winners. He
claimed the third spot
on Team South Africa late as he had sat in fourth place for a long time on
the 2017/2018 season before a late surge saw him snatch the berth from Greg Cheyne,
on a final haul of 137 winners, incidentally taking the Cape champion jockey
title.
