Given a short let-up after winning
the Group 2 EW Barker Trophy last November, CLARTON SUPER began the new
season on the same note when he captured the Group 3 Fortune Bowl at Kranji
here today.
Azhar Ismail, the winning jockey last time out, was back on the Alliance
gelding in the 1400m event and they came from just off the pace to beat the
pacemaker FOREVER YOUNG. Hot favourite, INFANTRY, had to settle for third.
While he carried a luxury weight of 51.5kg in the EW Barker Trophy, CLARTON
SUPER shouldered 56kg in today's condition-weight contest. And the
five-year-old showed that he has made much progress since with his fifth win
in 10 starts. The gelding was placed in his only start in Australia before
coming to Singapore.
"I
was hoping for a bit of rain, and it still hasn’t come. I was also worried
about him racing first-up and running against top guns like Infantry and
Well Done, but he’s shown today he can measure up to them,"
said trainer Tan Kah Soon.
"This
horse and I were meant to be together," said Azhar. "This is my ninth time
riding him and we’ve had five wins together. We won the EW Barker and we’ve
won a Group race again."
