MR CLINT, who came from a long way back to finish second
to BEE BEE in the Group 3 Singapore 3YO Sprint (1200m) but failed to fire in
the 3YO Classic (1400m), finally got it right to claim the S$1mil Singapore
Guineas (1600m) at Kranji here today.
With a change of rider to the visiting jockey Zac Purton,
the New Zealand gelding again settled well back in the field but came
charging home in the final 200m to win drawing away by one length.
It was the fourth win in nine starts for MR CLINT who was
originally purchased and trained by Laurie Laxon but transferred to Lee
Freedman before making his debut. It's the first group 1 win for Freedman in
Singapore since coming here last September.
"It’s
a great thrill to win a Group 1 race here in Singapore. We’re here now and
that’s what we have to do: Win these big races here, too,” said Freedman.
"This horse (MR CLINT) is not the greatest here, but he’s an honest
sort."
"I
didn’t expect he would show a bit of speed early, even if he was overracing
a little," said Purton. "I was able to put him back and he relaxed nicely
for me from thereon in. He pinged in the home straight and was just too
good."
MR CLINT, who cost NZ$95,000 at the
Ready To Run sale. has now won four times in nine starts.
