Ellis bags first win with Southern Man

Shane Ellis, a long-time assistant trainer to Laurie Laxon in Singapore, finally saddled his first winner when SOUTHERN MAN romped to an easy win Star Toto 6/50 Stakes at Sungei Besi here today.

After Laxon called it quits at Kranji, Ellis became assistant to trainer Lee Freedman but the lure of having his own stables proved too great and he quit to set up shops in Malaysia, based in Sungei Besi here since gaining his licence in May.

Ellis has taken his time to build up his stables and sending out the odd runner every now and then. Prior to this afternoon, he had saddled only eight runners.

SOUTHERN MAN, his 10th runner, was originally an emergency acceptor in the Star Toto 6/50 Stakes. Ridden by Ruzaini Supien, the Anacheeva gelding was well back early but moved up to fifth spot at the home bend.

SOUTHERN MAN hit the front 100m out but in the run home was able to pull away from the rest to win by 5 1/4 lengths.

The gelding won two of 14 starts in Singapore but after a few dismal runs in the middle of the year, was sent over to Ellis. Today's run was just his second for his new trainer.
