Crown Gift delivers surprise package

After finishing down the field in a similar race last time out, CROWN GIFT was understandably ignored in the betting in the Kranji Stakes C event over 1600m on the polytrack at Kranji here today.

Whereas he faded to beat one home after racing in midfield last start, the Phenomenons gelding was well up with the pace this time. He was travelling so well apprentice Troy See did not hesitate to take him to the front at the home bend and they never looked back.

CROWN GIFT went on to win by three lengths for his third win in 13 starts. He paid $231.

"He’s a progressive type. I was actually confident he would run well today, but I didn’t expect him to win in that kind of style," said trainer Young Keah Yong who also owns the gelding. "Forget his last run when he had a few factors against him. Looking at the way he won today, I’ll probably look for another mile race, but on turf."

For See, it was his 25th win of the season, extending his lead at the top of the table by five wins over two-time champion Wong Chin Chuen.

"I really didn’t expect this one, but it’s most welcomed as I’ve had three seconds in a row today (LAND BELOW D WIND, CLASSIFIED and PAPERBACK TROOPER),” said See.
