Although New Zealand trainer Mark Walker has won the
Singapore premiership twice in seven seasons at Kranji, he has to wait until
this afternoon to notch his first Singapore Group 1 success with ELITE
INVICIBLE in the S$1mil Giovanni Racing Charity Bowl.
The set-weight 1600m event, second leg of the Singapore
Four-Year-Old challenge, used to be known as Patron's Bowl.
ELITE INVINCIBLE, who battled to win the first leg, the
Stewards' Cup two weeks ago, again had to work hard to his victory.
Partnered again by Vlad Duric, the Irish gelding by
Archaracharch was kept handy throughout but had to battle to get past the
front-running fair 200m out. He then had to hold on to beat the
fast-finishing stablemate KINGSMAN by a short head.
"It’s taken a while, but that’s probably because I’ve had a lot of
bread-and-butter horses over the years,” said Walker of his long awaited
first Group 1 win. “I don’t really have the quality, but in saying this, you
never lose your ability."
Having won the first two legs of
the Singapore Four-Year-Old challenge, ELITE INVINCIBLE picked up a S$50,000
bonus. And then there is the final leg, the Emirates Singapore Derby on July
15 to come. The season could get even better for Walker.
