Selim Ipek lands first win in Malaysia

Turkish jockey Selim Ipek answered a call from trainer Simon Dunderdale to come to Malaysia and the rider repaid the latter with a win astride WHAT IFF in the Maiden - 1300m event at Sungei Besi here today.

Dunderdale was based in Turkey when Ipek first joined the riding ranks in 2008, riding a few winners that year.

The following Ipek announced his arrival in a big way with 46 winners.

With the loss of his apprentice claim, Ipek found himself with less opportunities and the call of the Far East was hard to resist.

WHAT IFF found one to beat three times in 10 starts in Singapore before moving to Malaysia under Dunderdale.

Under his new trainer, the Irish gelding started three times and again found one to beat twice.

There was an early tussle for the lead but WHAT IFF managed to take control on settling down and he held on to win by half a length from the favourite KING OPERA.
